This past week, MJCDS students celebrated Tu B’Shvat, the New Year of the Trees. Read more below about the Tu B’Shvat foods students ate and our visit with a neighborhood arborist.
Today is a special day in the kindergarten classroom: it’s 100 day, the hundredth day of school! Students each brought in 100 of a single item to count and to show their classmates.
A New Year Celebration?
During the last few weeks, MJCDS learners prepared themselves for Tu B’Shvat, the New Year of the Trees.
They learned that according to the rabbis, there are actually FOUR New Years, not just one. In addition to Tu B’Shvat there are Rosh HaShanah in Tishrei, Passover in Nissan, and the first of the month of Elul, which at one time dealt with animal tithing, but now acts as a reminder about the upcoming High Holidays.
In the 17th century, the Kabbalists accented the holiday of Tu B’Shvat by coming together, studying, and eating. They ate fruits and nuts that have peels/coverings, fruits that have pits, and fruits that are completely edible. These different types of fruit symbolize different aspects of human nature. They compared people and plants as suggested by the verse, Deuteronomy 20:19: “For man is like the tree of the field.” They also sang and danced.
Likewise, MJCDS students studied, sang, and learned about and ate various fruits and nuts. Students learned many fun songs and a particular verse that mentions the seven species that are tied closely to Israel.
Additionally, the students planted seeds with Israeli Shlicha Maya Pney-Gil and sampled even more fruit! They also learned about trees from our wonderful tree expert, Darrell, of Capital City Tree Experts Incorporated. We thank both Maya and Darrell for enriching our students’ learning!
During this unit of study, students wrote stories about trees, produced beautiful pictures, created matching word and picture game pieces and decorated picturesque plates with various fruit and nut groupings.
Students learned about the importance of trees from Darrell Krenz – a Madison-based arborist who owns a tree service.

The National Inventory Certification Association wanted a clean look for their website, but also needed skills to create an on-line certification course.
Providing a certification course on line requires more than just a normal, informational website. Internet Tech Specialists, a full service technology company, was recommended due to the special skills that would be called-upon to create National Inventory Certification Association’
Though certifications are not required for home and business inventory service professionals at this time, the trend indicates that this will be the norm soon. NICA was established to help encourage standards now, under which those who are certified agree to conduct business.
Mahler explained what was involved in this project. Loving all things technical, her enthusiasm was quite obvious as she described integrating the lesson modules. “NICA wanted a process that included the learning modules that would only permit the applicant access to the subsequent module if they passed the current test. They also wanted the final exam to be graded and a letter of congratulations issued – all electronically,”
Writing script, exceptions and “if” statements was a challenge. “I was stretched out of my comfort zone and completely enjoyed the project. I would have to say that the certification course and exam is one of my greatest achievements lately,” Mahler stated, more than enthusiastically.
In addition to the certification, she also was required to create a Membership directory and provide “buy now” buttons for the convenience of the current home inventory professionals who want to achieve certification. It all works so seamlessly, to the credit of Mahler’s expertise.
About National Inventory Certification Association
The National Inventory Certification Association (NICA) sets a foundation of professionalism, accepted standards, and quality customer service for the fast-growing personal property inventory (often called home inventory) sector. Being associated with other business owners through membership of the association and sharing the professional designation brings national recognition to the group as a whole, and to each company individually.

Snapp Screen System, the newest proprietary insect screening line released by Connecticut Screen Works, has become a top seller.
“We are very happy to confirm some good sales news; our newest product line surpassed all of our projections for 2011” Company President Sharon Caruso stated. On a cautionary note, Caruso also explained “The market for non-essential goods and services has been soft throughout the industry since 2009. We believe these sales are not from an expansion of any particular market segment but rather an indication that customers, who are purchasing these goods, are carefully researching products and selecting those that have better value and quality”.
Snapp is a one-piece extruded aluminum screening solution that is used to create screen enclosures such as a screen porch or screened deck. It is adaptable to a full spectrum of applications far outside the residential home market. Usage is limited only by the customer’s creativity.
The company acknowledges that it has received tremendous reviews from customers as well as from several very prestigious architects and building firms during its initial year of sales. Additionally, Snapp Screen System gained a “Hot Product” label from Extreme How-To Magazine. It has been successfully marketed for use in the retail, commercial, and residential applications and, within the last 60 days, gained installation approval for a large-scale municipal elderly housing project.
Total commercial quality, substantial adaptation, and competitive pricing were among some of the top reviews from builders and tradesman. “Clean lines and small reveal” were the two most frequent comments from Architects.
Snapp Screen System is available through the Connecticut Screen Works Authorized Dealer network or directly from Connecticut Screen Works (http://www.connscreen.com). Customers may obtain additional information about the Snapp Screen System by going tohttp://www.connscreen.com/
