“Ummm … what did you say? Deep fried gravy?”

“Yes, that’s what we’re offering,” said Gus Paschalis, CFO (Chief Frying Officer) at Wiener and Still Champion, the highly acclaimed fast food restaurant at 802 Dempster Street in Evanston, Illinois.

“We’ll add a patty of Deep Fried Gravy on any of our burgers, for a little extra charge of $1.50. I don’t know that you can get Deep Fried gravy anywhere else, so that small upcharge doesn’t seem too much. And, it’s really good gravy.”

Upon the first bite, the gravy oozes out over the 1/3 lb. of premium beef, with the crust of the patty adding a crunch, for an added textural element.

Deep Fried Gravy is not the first unusual, creative offering from Paschalis at Wiener and Still Champion. The restaurant is known for its Dippin’ Dogs™ — specially procured skinless hot dogs dipped to order in a proprietary cornbread batter, and then deep-fried to a golden brown deliciousness.

Many of Wiener and Still Champion’s most interesting offerings are solely available on its “secret menu” — items only available to those in the know, such as people who read articles like this.

Wiener and Still Champion has also received accolades for its Super-spicy Hell on Earth Burger™, Country-fried Bacon, Country-fried Gyros, deep-fried Pickle chips, and deep-fried Jalapeño chips.

And its hand-cut, double-fried award-winning French Fries are legendary.

Wiener and Still Champion is also the home of the Triple Undisputed 911 challenge. Amazingly, one patron consumed the 9-patty, 11 cheese slices huge burger in one minute and forty seconds.

A favorite of WGN radio’s Nick Digilio (who has his own unique burger at Wiener and Still Champion bearing his name), Wiener and Still Champion has also been featured in pieces by WLS-TV’s Steve Dolinsky, WGN-TV’s Marcus LeShock and Ted Brunson (Chicago’s Best), and Jeffery Saad (host of United Tastes of Food on the Cooking Channel). It was also featured in a Voice of America television segment, which has aired in Beijing, China, and is currently airing in over 100 other countries around the world.

It has been serving Evanston and the surrounding community since 1975. It is open every day for lunch, and every day except Sunday for dinner.
